The Best Brisket

I lived in Texas for several years during university and grad school and it’s definitely my favorite state! That being said, it never felt like ‘home’ to me, and I was happy to leave and move back to the Middle East. But I do miss it! Besides missing the people, the amazing hiking and mountain [...]

Junk in the Trunk.

This weekend was all about the junk, and it was perfect. It didn’t start out that way, though. It actually started out pretty healthy. Divine, as always. After breakfast we trekked across the causeway to Bahrain. We have been going there a lot lately, out of necessity. Errands, meetings, and appointments galore. Our meetings took [...]

Confessions: Just Because.

1. I love having a sweetie who brings me flowers ‘just because’. 2. It’s also pretty great having a sweetie who just happens to be a rock star. *Swoon* This was for Octoberfest and I think it was their best show yet.  3. Smoothies are baaaaack! I don’t know why, but after several weeks when [...]

Cobbled Together Peach Cobbler, or The Dinner That Made Me Scream.

Last night there was only one thing on my mind. Barbecue. I wanted something smoky and spicy, straight off the grill and nothing else would do. Cody and I are both novices at barbecuing so it took us much longer than we thought to get the coals going. Instead of eating at 7:30, we finally [...]

All Day Smoky Chicken Gumbo

Oh gumbo. If you haven’t had this pinnacle of Cajun cuisine, I’m not even sure I can explain it to you. It’s a medley of outrageous flavors, a thick broth made luscious with roux, and intensified and perfected by all day simmering. Gumbo is synonymous with Louisiana. Its muddy, rich flavors and full bodied spices [...]

Cheesy Beef ‘n’ Biscuit Bake

I like dishes with an ‘n’ in the title. They remind me of the time I worked as a waitress in a truck stop in a tiny little blink-and-you’ll-miss-it town in South Texas. I’ve never told you that I worked as a truck stop waitress? Well, I did. And I was no good at it. [...]

At the Break of Dawn.

I love it when I am awake really early. I love seeing the sunrise and I love listening to the peaceful quiet that is only interrupted by the swooping of parrots and cooing of pigeons. Okay, and since this is Saudi, also the roar of jet squadrons. Of course, I don’t actually ever set my [...]

Ever Grateful

Ever Grateful

Like many of my readers, today I’m spending the afternoon in my cozy kitchen preparing for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving holiday.

I’m stirring soup, roasting garlic, pureeing peas, and kneading dough. I’m very happy. But even on the busiest of days I like to escape outside to sit in the sun, listen to the palm fronds rustle in the breeze, and enjoy a delicious snack.

Vegan Buttermilk Pie

I’ve taken a lot of criticism for proclaiming more than one dessert ‘the best dessert in the world’ but you know what, I don’t care – this vegan buttermilk pie is the best dessert in the world! What can I say, I get really excited about my food and whatever tasty treat I’m feasting on [...]

Global Vegan: Louisiana – Gumbo

I wish I could adequately explain how outrageously authentic this gumbo is. I wish I could send you all a bowl so you could taste for yourself the smokey, thick, rich lusciousness of the broth, and the melt in your mouth softness of all the vegetables. The broth is so silky and thick, almost like [...]
